MD/MBA Programs
Over 50 institutions in the U.S. now offer dual-degree programs leading to simultaneous completion of a Doctor of Medicine and a Master of Business Administration
It’s been estimated that approximately 500 students graduate from MD/MBA programs each year nationwide. These students are a unique bunch, deviating from traditional medical career paths to enhance their opportunities at the intersection of health care and business. Their motivations are varied but some of the recurring themes include a growing dissatisfaction with the current health care system and a strong desire to make a difference in their profession. MD/MBAs typically aspire to be leaders and innovators, thereby shaping the future of medicine.
Most MD/MBA programs require students to be admitted to each school independently, without any preferential treatment over other candidates. As such, most schools require applicants to take both the GMAT and the MCAT. At some institutions, students may apply simultaneously to both programs. At others, students must first be accepted to the medical school and then apply to the MBA program during their second or third year of medical school. In most cases, the bulk of MBA coursework is undertaken after either the second or third year of medical school has been completed, during a “year off” dedicated exclusively to business school.
