A variety of programs now exist to train ambitious physicians and medical students in business and management. Dual-degree Doctor of Medicine/Master of Business Administration (MD/MBA) and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine/Master of Business Administration (DO/MBA) programs are typically structured to be completed in five academic years. Newer degree programs such as the Master of Medical Management (MMM) have recently emerged that aim to provide business education to currently practicing physicians. Collectively, the goal of these programs is to develop outstanding physician leaders who will confront the enormous challenges that our nation now faces and provide patients with quality care that is both cost-effective and ethically responsible. This requires a deep understanding of very complex problems and the interdisciplinary expertise to generate and implement innovative solutions. A new generation of physician leaders, skilled in both medicine and management, has the opportunity to substantially improve the health and well-being of individuals and society.
